Barrie Park re-opened in fall 2005
after a 5 year environmental cleanup effort. A manufactured
gas plant operated on the site of Barrie Park from 1893-1931,
leaving behind by-products that contaminated the soil. This
contamination was discovered in 1999 and through coordinated
efforts between the Park District of Oak Park, Village of
Oak Park, ComEd and NiCor, cleanup of Barrie Park began in
August 2001 and completed in December 2003. Park renovation
began shortly after the completion of park remediation.
The new Barrie Park
features a redesigned sled hill, a ball field and soccer field,
a creative play area, ornamental and shade trees, and a walking
path that encircles the park. It is located directly east
of Barrie Center, another recently renovated facility featuring
a fieldhouse, tot lot and multi-use sport court area. |
