Class Descriptions



Preschool Activity Classes (2 up to 6 years)
 Class  Description  Time
Gym Tots
(2-3 1/2)
A class designed for parent-child interaction. A structured, playful atmosphere which offers challenges and exploration in movement skills.
Classes are 45 minutes.
Gym Kids 1
(3 1/2-5 1/2)
With an emphasis on fun, children develop strength, coordination, and self-confidence in a structured environment. Students are introduced to basic gymnastics positions and terminology, using a variety of gymnastics apparatus.
Classes are 45 minutes.
Gym Kids 2
(4 1/2 up to 6)
While increasing their basic skills and gymnastics vocabulary, students will continue to develop the strength and flexibility necessary for success in any physical endeavor.
Classes are 1 hour.
Gym Kids 3
(5 up to 6)
For preschool children who have completed the Gym Kids 1 and 2 program.
Classes are 1 hour.


Recreational Classes (6-9 years; 10 and up)
OPGC follows the guidelines of the USAG Developmental Program which encompasses Levels 1-5. Students will learn the fundamentals of the sport with an emphasis on safety and progressions. Students will be periodically evaluated as they continue through the program.

Level 1
for the beginning gymnast.
Classes are 1 hour, 20 minutes.
Level 2
for the intermediate gymnast who can demonstrate proficiency in selected skills.
Classes are 1 hour, 20 minutes.
Levels 3, 4, and 5
are advanced levels.
Level 3 classes are 1 1/2 hours and Level 4/5 classes are 2 hours. Level 4/5 students must attend two classes a week.
GIJO
(Competitive Level)
This program offers recreational competition for girls in levels 4 and 5. All Level 4 and 5 girls are invited to participate.
The season runs February through early June (workouts begin in January) and culminates with a State competition.
Team
(Competitive Level)
USAG competition for girls, Levels 5-10; and boys, Levels 4-6.
Membership requires a year round commitment and is by invitation only.


Other Gym Activities

Preschool Playtime
A favorite with all our preschoolers, Preschool Playtime is an open gym for children 1-5 years old. Playtimes are Wednesdays 10-11:30 am and Fridays 1-2:30 pm, November-April. The cost is $5, or punch cards are available (10 playtimes for $40). All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. We do not allow food or drinks of any kind in the gym. Walk-ins welcome.

Cartwheel-A-Thon
Our annual Cartwheel-A-Thon raises funds for gymnastics equipment and team travel. Look for information in the Park District brochure.

Farmers’ Market
Students from the Gymnastics Center perform at the Farmers’ Market in Oak Park each summer in June and August.
