The
Friends of the Oak Park Conservatory (FOPCON) is a not-for-profit,
membership organization. The inspiration to establish a community
organization to support the work of the conservatory began
in 1971. At that time, a group of concerned citizens banded
together to raise funds to save the Conservatory when it had
fallen into disrepair.
After its success, the Friends
of the Oak Park Conservatory was
officially formed in 1986 to help
promote community interest, to
offer educational opportunities,
and to support projects that benefit
the Conservatory and its visitors.
Each year thousands
of guests enjoy seasonal events and educational opportunities
that are sponsored by the Friends. The Chrysanthemum Festival,
Holiday Open House and Poinsettia Show, Spring Open House,
and the popular Herb and Scented Plant Sale help to enrich
the Conservatory experience. Garden enthusiasts also delight
in the annual Garden Walk that the Friends co-sponsor each
summer with the Garden Club of Oak Park and River Forest.
Our education program
attracts both children and adults. Volunteer docents and plant
interpreters are trained and available throughout the year
to lead tours and answer questions about the Conservatory’s
plant collection. Group tours are available by appointment
and can be arranged by contacting the Program Manager at (708)
725-2460. During the winter months, the Friends also co-sponsor
evening lecture programs on horticulture and related disciplines.
