Shaping the Future of Oak Park Parks
Oak Park Conservatory Lead
Abatement and Upgrades
As the Oak Park Conservatory continues to age, the need
for facility renovation and equipment replacement becomes
more and more evident. The Park District, with the help of
the Friends of the Oak Park Conservatory, continues to make
improvements. In the last five years, lead abatement projects
have taken place in the Fern and Desert Rooms.
In 2007 the lead-based paint from the structure of the East
Growing House was abated and several upgrades were made to
improve growing conditions. These improvements included upgraded
mechanical vent controls, heating system, environmental controls
and new rolling benches for more efficient use of growing space.
A retractable shade device was installed in the East Growing
House which aids in maintaining an appropriate growing climate
for the plant life. Additionally, an emergency back-up generator
was installed at the Conservatory to keep heating systems operating
and prevent damage to plant life in the case of a power outage.
