Neighboorhood Center Restroom Improvements
Project Update: This project is now complete and all restrooms have been reopened.
Project History
The recreation centers at Andersen, Carroll and Field Parks were originally constructed in the late 1920s. Since that time the Park District has made numerous improvements to these facilities to accommodate the needs of our program patrons and park visitors. These neighborhood centers have existing interior restrooms. In late 2010, because of the increased need for a restroom to be used by park patrons while the centers are closed or in use by a program, the Park District of Oak Park with the assistance of Garapolo Maynard Architects explored the feasibility of constructing restrooms accessible from the exterior of the centers.
Garapolo Maynard Architects has since been contracted to complete the construction documents and assist with construction observation.
Project Summary
This 2011 project includes construction and installation of new public restrooms, only accessible from the exterior of the neighborhood center buildings, but still maintaining the existing interior restrooms.
In September 2011, the Park District of Oak Park, through a competitive bid process, hired Builders Land, Inc. to complete the improvements.
Restroom improvements to the centers will begin the week of September 19th at Andersen and Carroll Centers and October 3rd for Field Center with $25,000 allocated for each center facility in the Park District’s Capital Improvement Budget.
Park Availability
The centers will remain open during construction, however, there may be occasional and brief disruptions in electricity and water, as utilities for the new restrooms are joined in with the existing utility services. Construction zones will be properly isolated in the centers, ensuring safety to our patrons. Construction crew workers are not permitted beyond the construction zone at any given center while programs are in progress.
Project Team
The Working Group for this project is comprised of Don Maynard of Garapolo Maynard Architects; and Gary Balling, Matt Ellmann, Michael Grandy, and Neil Adams from the Park District of Oak Park.
