Pleasant Home Historic Site
2011 Fence Restoration Project
Project Summary
Following long range planning, the Park District of Oak Park and Pleasant Home Foundation began restoration of the decorative rolled steel fence surrounding Pleasant Home on the north (along Pleasant Street) and the east (along Home Avenue). The fence, designed by architect George W. Maher, and installed in 1901, is a National Historic Landmark, featuring Maher’s celebrated motifs of Pleasant Home. Estimated cost for the fence restoration is $400,000. This project is funded by the Park District’s Capital Improvement Budget.
A key element in the Mills Park Plan (following community forums), and of high priority in the Historic Structure Report for the site, the perimeter steel fence is in dire condition. Restoration will abate lead, repair structural weaknesses, shore-up masonry base, and return the sheen to its former glory on this 736 linear foot landmark fence.
New accessible entrances in the fence will open the historic site to all, allowing greater access to the museum and park, and will better accommodate wheelchair/stroller access. The phased Mills Park Plan, 2011-2015, includes accessible walkways, walking loop, natural meadow, children’s discovery area, and a labyrinth for all ages.
Project Timeline
In mid-March, the steel fencing was removed and taken off site for stripping, abatement, repair, priming and painting. While it is gone, the limestone-clad base will be cleaned, restored, and reset. The now-leaning middle pillar along Home Avenue will be dismantled and reset. Completion of the project is estimated for June 2011.
Restoration Contractors
Following an open bidding process, two contractors were selected to complete the fence restoration project. The stone and masonry work will be done by Restore Masonry LLC, of Chicago. The steel fencing work will be done by Midwest Fence of Chicago. Both contractors have completed work on historic sites.
Pleasant Home, Mills Park Availability
During construction, the home and park will remain OPEN for visitors and special events. A temporary safety fence will be installed along the fence line.
