Project History
Maple Park is a 7-acre site located between Harlem Avenue and Maple Avenue, and between Roosevelt Road and Lexington Street. The park currently includes 2 ball fields, three tennis courts, play equipment for ages 2 to 12, a comfort station, pathways, benches, and existing mature trees.

In spring 2007, after a competitive Request for Proposals process, Altamanu, Inc. of Chicago, Illinois was hired to provide professional landscape architecture services for the master site planning of Maple Park. After staff and focus group input, and four community meetings, the Park Board of Commissioners reviewed the Maple Park Site Plan final draft recommendation at the Committee of the Whole Meeting on Thursday, October 4, 2007. At the Regular Park Board Meeting on Thursday, November 15, 2007 the Park Board accepted the Maple Park Site Plan.

Altamanu, Inc. has since been contracted to complete the construction documents and assist with construction observation.

Project Summary
Improvements to Maple Park were scheduled to begin in 2009. The project was postponed until 2010 due to other project priorities and notification regarding a $400,000 matching grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The allocated amount of $635,000 in the Park District’s Capital Improvement Budget has been applied to the 2010 budget for Phase I improvements. An additional $200,000 in 2010 funds have also been allocated to this project. The Park District did not receive an IDNR grant. The total budget for the Phase I Maple Park improvements is $835,000.

Being the first of five improvement phases anticipated for Maple Park, this 2010 project includes construction of a new east side pathway, tennis court relocation and a dog park in the northwest corner of the park.

In June 2010, the Park District of Oak Park, through a competitive bid process, hired Copenhaver construction of Gilberts, Illinois to complete Phase I Improvements at Maple Park. A pre-construction meeting for the Maple Park Renovation Project was held on Wednesday, June 30 at 7pm at the Oak Park Conservatory to review the project details and timeline with the public. Construction work will begin on or soon after July 12th, 2010.

Park Availability
Construction fencing will encompass the northern, middle and southern half ends of the park site, however, Maple Park will remain open to the public during the project. Work will begin on or after July 12th, 2010 and will be complete early spring 2011.

Project Team
The Working Group for this project is comprised of Josephine Bellalta and Phil Hutchinson of Altamanu, Inc.; Jamil Bou-Saab and Jerry Pilipowicz of Terra Engineering; and Gary Balling, Michael Grandy and Neil Adams from the Park District of Oak Park.
