Shaping the Future of Oak Park Parks

Stevenson Park Site Master Plan Development

As part of the Park District of Oak Park's Capital Improvement Plan, a site master plan is being developed for Stevenson Park. The overall objective of a site plan is to provide “a framework or blueprint for future park renewal.”

Stevenson Park encompasses 3.3 acres of open space. It features an all-purpose sports field, a baseball/softball field, and playground equipment for ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12 years. In 2004 the Active Sports Area opened on the east side of Stevenson Park featuring 3 half-court basketball courts and a skatepark. Stevenson Center, located in the center of the park, is home to 49 Lake Teen Center.The following is an outline of the planning process.

Focus Groups
Two focus groups were held in mid-April 2011 to collect information regarding the current and future use of Stevenson Park. The first focus group discussed safety & security and buildings & grounds. First Community Meeting
The first community meeting (meeting notes) to gather initial public input regarding the current and future use of Stevenson Park was held on Wednesday, April 20 at 7pm at Stevenson Center, 49 Lake Street. (PowerPoint Presentation)

Residents were invited to provide their input regarding the future of Stevenson Park by completing a questionnaire which was available through May 10. (first questionnaire results)

Second Community Meeting
A second community meeting to review preliminary site options and collect additional public input was held on Wednesday, May 18 at 7pm at Stevenson Center, 49 Lake Street. (PowerPoint Presentation) Three park site plan concepts were presented and discussed. (below)

Third Community Meeting
A third community meeting was held on Wednesday, June 8 at 7pm at Stevenson Center, 49 Lake Street to review and discuss a alternative draft concepts for the Stevenson Park site plan. (PowerPoint Presentation)

Fourth Community Meeting
A fourth community meeting was held on Wednesday, June 22 at 7pm at Stevenson Center, 49 Lake Street. At this meeting, 3 final draft concepts were presented and discussed. (PowerPoint Presentation)

Concept C was eliminated from consideration at the 4th meeting. A 4th questionnaire was conducted after the 4th community meeting to collect additional input regarding Concepts A and B. Questionnaire Results

Next Steps
The Park Board of Commissioners reviewed and discussed the final two site plan concepts at the Committee of the Whole Meeting on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Oak Park Conservatory, 615 Garfield Street.

At the Regular Park Board Meeting on Thursday, July 21, 2011 the Park Board continued a discussion on the site plan. Concept B is no longer under consideration. The size of the sports field continues to be discussed as well as the inclusion of a baseball infield and backstop.

At the Regular Park Board Meeting in August, rescheduled to Tuesday, August 23 at Stevenson Park, alternate concepts for the Stevenson Park site plan were presented by Altamanu Inc. and discussedby the Park Board.

A revised concept was presented to the Park Board at the Committee of the Whole Meeting on Thursday, September 1, 2011 held at the Oak Park Conservatory. This concept was accepted by the Board at the Regular Park Board meeting held on Thursday, September 15.
