Park District of Oak Park Art Advisory Committee Call For Artists
Posted February 2011

THE PARK DISTRICT OF OAK PARK, created in 1912, oversees 21 parks in Oak Park, IL. These parks serve Oak Park residents and visitors, and are also used for regional events such as arts festivals and fairs, musical and theatrical performances and special events. Oak Park, situated nine miles west of downtown Chicago, and known as the birthplace of Ernest Hemmingway and for the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, sees close to 90,000 tourists each year from within Illinois, across the United States, and overseas.

The Park District Art Advisory Committee, which oversees the Park District art collection and placement of art in the parks, has chosen several park locations around the village for public sculpture. This call for entries is an opportunity to showcase national artists in an internationally visited community.

Although we are primarily looking for large works, we have established sites in the parks where pedestrian paths parallel possible art locations and allow for views of smaller works as well. Each installation will be in place for 12-36 months.  The selected works will be publicized by the Park District, including display on the Park District website. Based on electronic material submitted by the artist, appropriate descriptions of the artists and their work, and a link to his/her own Web site, will be displayed on the Park District website.  A contract with the artist would be required.

Artists are responsible for providing descriptions and images of work in electronic format.

Stipend: $1,000 for each year installed. Every effort will be made to publicize the work with the local media. Open to all artists 18 or older. All media considered.  $25 non-refundable fee must accompany the Application (see above). Selected finalists will be notified by mail.

Liability: Every precaution is taken in handling entries. All work is insured during the installation process and while the work is on display in the Park District. Shipping insurance is the artist’s responsibility.

Return of the Work: Upon closing of the exhibition, work must be picked up by the artists themselves, unless specific arrangements have been made between the artist and the Park District. All shipped artwork will be returned in its original container with pre-paid label. The rights of and duties of artists and the Park District are more fully explained in the Art Advisory Committee Guidelines for Submission (see above).
